Subject: P Ramlee

Hi Nick,
FYI, P Ramlee had never acted or directed a Pontianak film. He had made two films in the horror genre namely, 'Sumpah Orang Minyak' / 'Curse Of The Oily Man' (1958) and 'Sitora Harimau Jadian' / 'The Tigerman' (1964). The former title is available on VCD/DVD. Sadly, 'Sitora Harimau Jadian' that is the Malay version of werewolf, however, is lost. It was the first film P. Ramlee made in Merdeka Studio after his transfer from Singapore to Malaysia and, therefore, has much historical value.

BTW, the first two Pontianak films, namely, 'Pontianak' (1957) and 'Dendam Pontianak' / 'Revenge of Pontianak' (1957) directed by B N Rao are lost. The reels of both films (together with a few others) were literally thrown into the Klang river in Kuala Lumpur by Ho Ah Loke, one of Cathay Keris film co-producers following a bitter split. Incidentally, the man was unhappy to get his share of Pontianak films thinking that the series might not be played again after its main actress Maria Menado got married to a Malay sultan. Another much sought film is the first of 'Orang Minyak' (1958) series which is considered lost.

>Hello I am gathering information for an article I am writing on Lost films of asia, and Ramlee's name keeps coming up as a director of some of them, But its hard to tell if they are really lost becuase there are so many. I was wondering if you could you tell me a little bit about his first Pontianak film if you know anything about it. I was hoping to include a section on his Pontianak film or maybe another famous lost film of his. thanks for yor help

Hi Gaga,
The copyrights of most P Ramlee songs belonged to EMI (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

You may want to contact the company directly for permission to use their songs.

Subject: Enquiry

Hi Oummar,
There are many Malay classic films that I could not collect myself. Apparently, not all titles in Music Valley's catalogue reached the outlets. Also, the company now has stopped producing many VCDs to concentrate on fast moving titles. :(

Did you mean you already read my book 'Koleksi P.Ramlee'? I'll be going north end of the month to deliver my books at selected outlets. Any suggestions what local stores I could visit other than the big book chains in Ipoh?

Right now my collection stood at 211 (VCD and VHS). If you able to sell these VCD, I wish to know how much is the price per title. I love to hear nice feedback from you.

Subject: Copyright enquiry

Hi Ahmad,
The song copyrights belonged to the music composer and songwriter respectively (e.g. P Ramlee and S Sudarmadji). Shaw Organisation also owned the copyrights of the film songs

Hi Cecilie,
You may use the P Ramlee's images at our www.p-ramlee.com (www.felix-entertainment.com is the mirror site). You can browse our list of film posters, fill stills of P Ramlee with leading ladies, and of course, various pictures of Saloma. Sorry, we could only provide you with whatever images on the site. You can get someone to convert the images into higher resolution. Kindly give pictures credit to the site.

>Harper's Bazaar Singapore are currently doing a fashion feature that talks about P. Ramlee and Saloma and I was therefore hoping to see if you holding an archive with high res images of old movie posters or stills. I am particular after a movie poster from Masam Masam Manis, a movie still of their scene with the song Saat Yang Bahagia or an image of Saloma. Please advice if you have such a archive and I will of course credit your organisation!
