Hi Shamsuddin,
The late P Ramlee was laid to rest at the Muslim cemetery on Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur about five minutes walk from the Malaysian Tourist Center. The grave of his beloved wife actor/singer Saloma and good friend actor A R Tompel are nearby. Ironically, Saloma spent after life close to her two former husbands.

The man has indeed done great work during his time. Perhaps those who are muslims here ought to give him Al-Fatihah, Tahlil as a way to say thanks for all his works that we enjoys. Sometimes, I just visit his grave at Jalan Ampang when I feel I have enjoyed too much of P.Ramlee's films. Saloma and A R Tompel is just beside. The serenity that I enjoyed at his grave is something one cannot describe. Believe me he is enjoying himself on the other side...He is a man who had a proper sufism learning before he become an artist. In his last movie, he mentioned in a subtle way his Guru's code which I cannot tell here. What I can say that Guru is a Saint. But then again..maybe you guys know already about this.

Attn: All P Ramlee's Fan
To some, P Ramlee's era was "passe",
but..to me, it's the most honest,
not superficial world we once live in.
It showed how 'basic' the Malay Culture was.
The humour and the sarcasm showed and teached...
'if a man put a price on himself, then he worth nothing'.
I still have faith in human integrity.
Whenever I watched P Ramlee's Films via DVD (thank God for giving man the brain to invent),
I can reminished the good-old-days while growing up in Singapore.
Eventhough P Ramlee died (he was supposely materially pauper,
eventhough he was bestowed a Royalty Title)
but his Talents is ageless and priceless.
We have a Malay saying;

'Harimau mati tinggalkan belang,
manusia mati tinggalkan Nama..'
<"A tiger died leaving its stripes,
A man died leaving his name">

I hope P Ramlee's Fan Club will maintain its reputation for reviving
this 'Man of all season'.
Thank You,
Kamariah Galanter,

Subject: The studio at No. 8 Jalan Ampas

Here is, attached, a picture of the MFP Studios at Jalan Ampas.

The studios are still there, untouched. Just a little bit run down...

When you drive by, it is a very nostalgic place.

Take care,
Raphael

Dear Richard,
It must be a very nostalgic experience to watch that movie some fifty years later. You must know that it is one of the very very important movies starring P Ramlee and that it brought him much fame. Personally, I like it a lot.

May I send you two pictures related to the release of the movie, in those old days ? It is things I have collected for my book on Singapore cinema. You can keep them, for personal use of course.

1. Advertisement of 'Anak-ku Sazali'
2. Released of 'Anak-ku Sazali' by Phani Majumdar at Empire Theatre in 1956

I'd be curious to see the picture of Phani Majumdar you have. The man is very rare on photos, as he used to be mainly... behind the camera.

Take care,
Raphael MILLET

The film arrived today and I have already played it twice. I do not remember much Malay after nearly 50 years but I still enjoyed the film, and P Ramlee's performance from young man to old man is excellent!

The lake was a small one near Willow Avenue in Singapore. It is where the early part of the film was made with the young couple singing on the steps by the water, and the boat. There is a single shot looking across the water at the far side of the lake, but this must have been taken somewhere else because it was much bigger.

I met P Ramlee and the other actors who were in those scenes, but I can not remember much about him. I did not know then that he would become so famous. I lived in Singapore in the 1950's because my father went to work there.

The lake did not have a name that I remember, and is not there any more. It has been filled-in, and a large school built over it. I have attached a street map showing where it was. Also there is a copy of the the photo of me standing next to Phani Majumdar.

Thank you for sending the film so quickly. I will watch it again!

Richard

Hi Richard,
I suppose that was in 1956. You still remember name of the lake for film location? What were your family doing in Singapore? Would be happy if you have stories to add and/or photo I could post to the Fans of P Ramlee.

Some of the outdoor scenes were filmed by a lake very near to where I lived, and I used to go and watch. I met all the cast including P Ramlee and they were very friendly to me. I have a photo of me standing next to Phani Majumdar that he has signed on the back.

Hi Louis,
The Shaw studio at No. 8 Jalan Ampas, off Balestier Road in Singapore is physically intact. Last time I visited the place was abandoned and closed to the public.

Hi Khairulfaizie,
Thanks for the input.

Just to add: 'Nora Zain Agen Wanita 001' / 'Nora Zain Female Agent 001' (1967) was released by Malay Film Productions but shot at Shaw studio in Hong Kong. The VCD is available at record stores in Malaysia. Think I might get a copy to check it out.

Salam,

The other early Malay film in colour was 'Raja Bersiong' produced by Tunku Abdul Rahman. The cost was substantial for a Malay film then, and had limited market potential. I understood then that P Ramlee was critical about the project and the very reason he did not participate in its production. The film was eventful and had the contribution of almost all the top stars in the Malay film fraternity. However, I am really not too sure whether it was pre 70s production or mid 70s.

Apart from 'Hang Tuah', there was another film made in colour >>> 'Ribut'.

The film 'Ribut' was made in 1955. Ahmad Mahmud and Saadiah starred and K M Basker was the director.

Hi Mohammad,
As far as I know, the only Malay classic film made in color was P Ramlee's 'Hang Tuah' (1956) directed by Phani Majumdar. It cost about $1 million at that time and the producers not willing to spend so much on the next films. Sad that P Ramlee not able to make another one at his peak.

Maybe someone in the list know of other Malay classic film (made before 1970) in color.

Subject: P. Ramlee's role as a doctor in movies

Hi Abbas,
I know of P Ramlee acting as Dr Rushdi in 'Dr Rushdi' (1970). Can't recall him as Dr Latiff in what film. There is also a Dr Effendi in 'Sitora Harimau Jadian' (1964) which I believed was played by P Ramlee. I haven't seen Sitora as the film is 'unofficially' banned in Malaysia because of the mystical character :(

Hope to hear other comments from people in the list.
