Subject: Inquiring the availability of P Ramlee's Music Scores

Hi Ashikin,
I would suggest that you visit the Arkib Negara in Kuala Lumpur. They have a catalogue of P Ramlee books including Getaran - A P Ramlee Tribute. Songs from his movies published by Panggung Negara (1998). You could request photocopy of the music sheet page for a fee.

Subject: Tears in Kuala Lumpur

Greetings,
This year we would be celebrating P Ramlee's 86th birthday, that is, if he is still alive today. He was born on 22 Mac 1929. And, passed away at a relatively young age of 44 about 42 years ago on 29 May 1973. He died literally broke and broken. In his last days, he was rejected by his former employer, booed by his old fans and ignored by his junior colleagues.

This Indonesian lad (whose father arrived in British colony Penang from Aceh) won his first singing contest as a member of 'Pemuda Indonesia Keronchong Party' in Penang before making his fame and fortune in Singapore. At a tender age of 19 he rose to become the biggest star attraction amongst the pool of talents from all over Nusantara Melayu residing in Jalan Ampas Studio. The initial 'P' in his name became synonymous with 'Pujaan' (Idol) in Malay. He went on to win many local and international awards for songs and films that he created.

History has dictated that P Ramlee's biggest mistake was his homecoming to Malaysia. He had a flawed vision of making Kuala Lumpur into the next film center. Starting with the unrealized dream of his own Perusahaan Filem P Ramlee to take over that tiny Merdeka Film Studio in Ulu Klang. Formation of the Malaysian Film Industries (also known as 'Perusahaan Filem Malaysia' or 'Perfima') with several ill will friends. Finally, the launching of Rumpun Filem Melayu, not after his untimely death months earlier. Pause.

Let's rewind.

P Ramlee, "Malaysia's foremost patriot". He featured a 'Hotel Malaysia' mock-up in his film even before the country is formally declared. Taking scenery shots of Kuala Lumpur's spanking new landmarks in another film. Exploring multi-racial theme in no less than two films. Performing a Joget duet with wife Saloma about the newly Malaysia in yet another. But his love for the country was all in vain.

Malaysia had ignored P Ramlee. He was never allowed to host musical program on the Government owned RTM. He appeared on two television dramas, one of which was cancelled mid-way. His first film made in Malaysia called 'Sitora Harimau Jadian' / 'The Tigerman' (1964) was banished (sic) after it was passed for cinema screening. The next film 'Minta Nombor Ekor', a comedy which is part of 'Ragam P Ramlee' (1965) was officially banned. Another film 'Sabarudin Tukang Kasut' / 'Sabarudin The Cobbler' (1966) was no longer shown on local TV with many segments in VCD version literally 'black out' for public view. His adult drama films were self censorship by both Government and private stations. Yes, these are films that P Ramlee made at Merdeka Studio in Malaysia.

During his final days, he was tormented by a court case as joint guarantor for restaurant loan taken by a film colleague from the Government's Malay Aid agency. Some saying this what triggered a heart attack before the hearing that morning. He died penniless. Taking with him a failed ambition and many shattered dreams. Leaving behind a local film industry that would never gain its former glory. And, a shameful nation that never learn to value the greatest son during lifetime or give right kind of respect after his death. No posthumous 'Tan Sriship', 'Datukship', 'Honorary Doctorate' or whatever rhetoric is worthy to a long dead person. Especially P Ramlee.
