Hi Siaw Ming,
You can try Arkib Negara's catalogue of P Ramlee books and all stuff. And pay them to make photocopy of the music sheet book page.

Subject: Filem P.Ramlee Jadi Misteri

Hi Hj. Karni,
Many apologies for my reply in English for the benefit of other members who don't speak Malay.

Why these two P Ramlee films, 'Sabarudin Tukang Kasut' (1966) and 'Sitora Harimau Jadian' (1964) not shown on TV RTM? Your guess is as good as everybody else.

I suspect that Sitora Harimau Jadian was 'quarantine' earlier by the Malaysian censorship board but later the copy got missing. But we could all pray that there are other copies collecting dusts in Shaw Hong Kong or some old cinemas. What a real tragedy that P Ramlee's first film after his home coming to Malaysia can go missing.

You can still find Sabarudin Tukang Kasut on VCD released by Music Valley. However, the audio and video quality are terribly horrible except for the story content. Worst thing is various parts of the film had been blocked (darkened) just because those in power don't like the dialogues. This is what P Ramlee had to say about the issue, "Filem ini adalah hasil pemikiran yang mendalam, pengalaman yang meluas dan pengkajian yang halus, teliti dan bertanggung jawab (This film is a product of deep thought, vast experience and meticulous research, detailed and responsible)." Some people are still afraid of the words of wisdom from a dead man.

You can read more about the censorship of P Ramlee's works and other interesting topics in my new book magazine 'Koleksi P Ramlee' available at selected stores in Klang Valley very soon. Details will be announced.

Subject: Copyright enquiry

Hi Ahmad,
The song copyrights belonged to the music composer and songwriter respectively (e.g. P Ramlee and S Sudarmadji). Shaw Organisation also owned the copyrights of the film songs.

Subject: Songs Copyright?

Hi Along Ailina,
Felix Entertainment doesn't owned any copyright to P Ramlee's works. I supposed the copyrights of P Ramlee's songs belonged to the administrator of the estate of P Ramlee and the respective song lyricist. You could liaise with the Music Authors Copyright Protection Berhad (MACP) on how to go about using any music copyrights.

Subject: Collector's P Ramlee VCD

Hi Nazirul,
Very thank you for the information. Now I know where to look for the rare items if I need to steal later. But so sad if these P Ramlee's work of arts really >don't exist anymore: 1. 'Noor Asmara'. 2. 'Bakti'. 3. 'Penghidupan'. 4. 'Melanchong Ke Tokyo'. 5. 'Sitora Harimau Jadian'. 6. 'Rantau Selamat' (Drama TV)>. Someone has to start a national campaign to hunt for these "lost" treasure. Sometimes, copy of the items could be found overseas, Hong Kong especially.

Hi Nazirul,
I am seriously looking for a copy of 'Takdir Ilahi' (1950), 'Miskin' (1952), 'Gelora' (1970) and 'Putus Sudah Kaseh Sayang' (1971) which are listed in the "available in market" catalogue. Perhaps, also 'Bukan Salah Ibu Mengandung' (1969). And I will be damn so lucky able to watch 'Melanchong Ke Tokyo' (1964) in color production. Another color film, 'Love Parade' (1963) in Mandarin made by Shaw HK is still available but not sure if the company keep the scenes with P Ramlee and Saloma. I really think 'Sitora Harimau Jadian' (1964) is still out there, somewhere, and let forgotten, by those guys on the Censorship Board in 1960s because of its taboo subject. Let me know if you can be of much help.

Saves you the trouble. However, continue your lofty quest, maybe you'll find some unexpected gem along the way. Who knows, huh?

Subject: Collector's P Ramlee VCD

Hi Nazirul,
I already started to collect old NNB VCDs. For many years I been hunting for several P Ramlee titles at the outlets in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Johor. They are apparently no longer in print. But recently, I managed to persuade my family in Singapore to do yearend shopping at Geylang and check out a few VCD outlets there. Also, reminded them repeatedly not to get the Music Valley version. To my pleasant surprise, one outlet still has some more of NNB copies left from the last millennium :)

Three NNB copies that I preciously keep namely, 'Nilam' (1949), 'Ibu' (1953) and 'Sesudah Suboh' (1967) are now hard to find in Malaysia. Surprisingly, Music Valley does not release these titles at their stores although listed in the catalogue. These P Ramlee VCDs are also valuable because the films are hardly shown on local TV nowadays. Another gem in my collections is NNB's 'Ragam P Ramlee' (1965). This one has all three sections of the original film i.e. the 'Ragam P Ramlee' music videos, 'Minta Nombor Ekor' comedy drama and a Malay folklore 'Damaq'. >Oh man...I was ecstatic!> TOO. 'Minta Nombor Ekor' has been banned in Malaysian cinemas as well as TV, VHS, VCD etc. since its early released. In fact, P Ramlee made a damning criticism at the ulamaks that advised the Censorship Board to snip the whole of his comedy drama. It could be that the NNB copy is from Singapore uncut version. Somehow, I pretty sure already watched 'Minta Nombor Ekor' long time ago. Seen it on TV first time when I was just a kid. My family and I lived on the other side of the causeway during that time.

I awaiting for my purchase order of NNB's 'Ali Baba Bujang Lapok' (1961), 'Sabarudin Tukang Kasut' (1966) and 'Keluarga 69' (1967). Hopefully, they too have the uncut scenes intact. And if I am so lucky, able to get 'Miskin' (1952) and 'Gelora' (1970) as bonus. These two titles are not released by Music Valley although listed in the catalogue. I won't comment further on your posting until I watch these copies.

Nazirul wrote:

>Yep, that part. I have the NNB version but now i think there's an earlier (or older?) NNB version around, with the NNB logo a bit thicker (bold font). Just two days ago, I watch the bold NNB version of 'Keluarga 69' from my Aunt's VCD. Guess what? There's an extra of almost 10 minutes of scenes that I've never seen before! The part where Osman, Badim, En Rashid, Faridah, Siti and her friend are celebrating Faridah's birthday at Adora Inn. Also, the part where Osman and Faridah are singing outside before he asked her to marry him. Oh man...I was ecstatic!
>
>Also, a few days before I watched Ali Baba Bujang Lapok (Astro version) and I noticed at the end, P Ramlee wrote the name of TWO Bujang Lapok films he planned to do next! I knew about Bujang Lapok Melanchong Ke Tokyo (or is it Hong Kong) to be filmed in Hong Kong but cancelled by Shaw due to the union demanding more pay. Not enough money, so cancelled. In Ali Baba, I discovered two more, 'Bujang Lapok Berjumpa Puteri Gunung Ledang' and 'Bujang Lapok Naik Ke Bulan'. Sounds a bit far fetched, I know but hey, it's P. Ramlee's Bujang Lapok! I'm sure those are just working titles. Interesting huh? What if the script is written already and still sits somewhere?
>
>Today, a VCD store guy told me that FINAS is the one censoring all these VCDs. He said FINAS definitely has the original master copies. I think I'm planning to go there and have a look.
>
>And, to answer your question.... I do have a working VHS tape player/recorder right in front of me, right now. It's connected to my computer and ready to convert any VHS tape into digital video. No kidding.
>
>So, I'm wishing you luck with the search!
